Welcome Tween Book Clubbers.
It's a brave new world where Miss C's taking over the page!
These recommendations are hers and guaranteed to see you disappear into imaginary other worlds of action and adventure for HOURS. Boringly.. the Editor snuck in some recommendations too. She's been banned in future. We apologise..
Next #rpkbookclubbers it'll be a Tweens-only affair.
That's right: Miss C + you flying solo.
DO please, try this at home. Write in with your suggested reads by title and author; why they're cool / we should read them; and your review could be published.
Happy days happy reading,
Miss C and me. x
Why is the Wolf Girl series cool?
Firstly they're action and adventure books so they're exciting. Also our hero's a very cool chick. Resourceful and smart, she has to learn to survive in the wild without her family or any home comforts. She also becomes the family leader which is unusual and interesting.
I liked this book because it has a strong female lead and talks a lot about strength - that everybody has theirs you just have to tap into it, and believe in yourself. And also that strength can be born out of tough situations.
And lastly, no matter how strong you are, we are always stronger together.
This book also helped me imagine if I was displaced suddenly how that would feel...but you'll have to just run with that because to tell you anymore would be a major spoiler!
PERCY JACKSON + MAGNUS CHASE
Why are the Percy Jackson + Magnus Chase series cool?
Set in modern times but using the characters and mythology of the Ancient Greeks and Norse as backdrop for each series, Percy + Magnus books manage to teach you all about ancient Mythologies in a really fun way.
These are adventure books too - the world is going to end in nearly all the stories!
But they're mostly about friendship and courage. There's lots of popular culture references and funny gags. The boy characters are the heros but not in an "I'll save you princess.." Super-Hero kind of way. They're interesting and cheeky and smart and kind. And the girl characters are smart and strong and fierce.
Your parents will like these books because (a) you're learning something; and (b) all the dads are gods + mums are rad. Say no more..
THE JONESES AND THE PIRATEERS
Why are the Joneses and the Pirateers series cool?
Truth be told me hearties, we have only read the first book in this series: 'Search For The Phantom Lady'. A romping good yarn, it was my choice this year for book week dress up, and we have recommended it to, literally every tween we know.
Book 2: Escape from San Lazaro is JUST OUT and we're so excited!
First if you like pirates these books are for you. If you like adventures in general - these book's are for you. If you like stories with BOTH male and female heros; like proving you can do things others say you can't; and you love a good prank - these books are for you.
If you're no good at maps. Well.. best bring a friend... there's no phoning one where we're going...
Ps. all author royalties from Search for the Phantom Lady goes to Project Futures, an organisation which focuses on giving hope by transforming lives of children (and women) affected by human trafficking and slavery.
All author royalties from Escape from San Lazaro are ear marked for the Great Barrier Reef Foundation which is tackling threats and challenges to Australia’s Barrier Reef and has a special place in the hearts of all little Aussie-pirateers.
Two great reasons for grabbing your copy 👊
These are each and all a fab addition to your tween's bookshelf. The first is relevant to all tweens but obviously targeted at girls. However the second two are most definitely relevant across the board.
